Product Description & Reviews

While Kierkegaard is primarily known as a philosopher or religious thinker, his writings have also been used extensively by literary writers, critics and artists. This use can be traced in the work of major cultural figures not just in Denmark and Scandinavia but also in the wider world. They have been attracted to his creative mixing of genres, his complex use of pseudonyms, his rhetoric and literary style, and his rich images, parables, and allegories. The present volume documents this influence in the different language groups and traditions. Tome V treats the work of a heterogeneous group of writers from the Romance languages and from Central and Eastern Europe. Kierkegaard has been particularly important for Spanish literature: the Argentine writers Jorge Luis Borges, Leonardo Castellani, and Ernesto Sábato, the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes, and the Spanish essayist and philosopher María Zambrano were all inspired to varying degrees by him. The Dane also appears in the work of Romanian writer Max Blecher, while the Portuguese author Fernando Pessoa was almost certainly inspired by Kierkegaard’s use of pseudonyms. Kierkegaard has also influenced diverse literary figures from Central and Eastern Europe. His influence appears in the novels of the contemporary Hungarian authors Péter Nadas and Péter Esterházy, the work of the Russian writer and literary critic, Mikhail Bakhtin, the Polish writer Witold Gombrowicz and the Czech novelist Ivan Klíma. Tome V also examines how Kierkegaard’s treatment of the story of Abraham and Isaac in Fear and Trembling interested the Polish-born Israeli novelist Pinhas Sadeh.

Figures of the Text: Reading and Writing (in) La Fontaine (Purdue University Monographs in Romance Languages)
By John Benjamins Publishing Company
ean: 9781556193064, isbn: 1556193068,
The works of Jean de La Fontaine have invited an extraordinary variety of readings in the three centuries since their composition. By engaging selected fables and tales with contemporary notions of intertextuality, reader reception theory, and grammatology, Figures of the Text raises questions about what “reading La Fontaine” meant in the 17th century, and what it means today. The study integrates a theory of reading and a theory of textual production by drawing attention to those aspects

Verb Phrase Syntax: A Parametric Study of English and Spanish (Studies in Natural Language and Linguistic Theory)
By Karen Zagona
mpn: biography, ean: 9789401077248, isbn: 940107724X,
This study is concerned with the structure of verb phrases in English and Spanish, and with syntactic processes involving VP and Vo. A primary focus of attention is auxiliary verbs. It is argued that the structure dominating these verbs is essentially the same in English and Spanish, as is the structure dominating auxiliaries and 'main' verbs in each language. It must be concluded that the occurrence of distinct syntactic processes affecting auxiliaries and other VP constituents in the two

Le but de ce livre est de démontrer les contradictions et inconsistances de Voltaire qui, en dépit des croyances selon lesquelles il passe pour le grand défenseur des minorités religieuses, de la tolérance et de la liberté de la presse, a eu d’énormes difficultés à tolérer les journalistes qui encensaient le pouvoir et l’église ou qui sapaient sa réputation littéraire par la critique et l’analyse de ses œuvres. Les journalistes Guyot-Desfontaines et Guillaume Berthier sont

The Theatre of Naturalism: Disappearing Act (Currents in Comparative Romance Languages and Literatures)
By Brand: Peter Lang International Academic Publishers
ean: 9781433112973, isbn: 1433112973,
The impact of naturalism, a literary approach invented by Zola and especially significant in the field of the novel through his American «disciples» Crane, Norris, and Dreiser, is well acknowledged and recognized. Not so well recognized, but equally important, is naturalistic theatre; this was a style that also originated with Zola, but its progeny was more international and its significance more radical and insurrectionary than in the less «spectacular» genre of fiction. The Theatre of
